My Experiment

  • I have decide to conduct a survey to determine 6 people's personality, and whether or not they match their blood type traits.
  • The purpose of this test is to compare people with type A blood and the other blood types. So I have chosen 3 people with blood type A, and another 3 people with blood types B or O.
  • The survey is consisted of 9 multiple choice questions with answers that are either a 'type A' answer, 'type B' answer or neither. A 'type A' answer will give the person +1 point, 'type B' answer will subtract one point and a 'neither' anwer will no have any effect.
  • Therefore people with higher points mean that she has a 'type A' personality and people with lower points mean that she has a 'type B personality'.
  • There is one separate question that asks how many hobbies/sports they do.

Let's look at the results!

Blood Types and Personality

What is this all about?

  • However this belief is widely popular in the Japanese culture and has spread through other Asian countries.
  • Discussion of blood types can be seen everywhere in the media! These include TV shows, women’s magazines, horoscopes and comic strips.

Blood type is a very important information to be tested for blood donations, but there is also a common belief in some cultures that blood type can influence a person’s personality. It is believed that each of the four blood types, A, B, O and AB each have a special personality!

This belief is still popular!

The Theory

Type A

Type B

A Brief History

Many of the researches were non-statistical and unclear and were criticised by psychologists. The theory is considered as superstition or pseudoscience by scientists today.

This belief remains as an unclear theory.

Results

  • Bright, wild, active, creative, enthusiastic, cheerful, outgoing, optimistic, curious
  • enjoys multiple hobbies and skills
  • willing to stand out and be different
  • bad traits: selfish, irresponsible, unforgiving
  • Serious, sensitive, earnest, patient, responsible, calm, detailed, neat, well-prepared
  • not usually out going and do not express their emotions as much
  • like: organisation, peace
  • bad traits: pessimistic, stressful, overanxious, fastidious, tense, stubborn
  • The ABO blood group system have been founded by the Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner.
  • In 1927, Takeji Furukawa, a Japanese professor, published his paper "The Study of Temperament Through Blood Type" in the scholarly journal Psychological Research.
  • His paper was considered to have a lack of credentials, yet this theory still raised a big interest in the Japanese public.
  • Such interest faded soon after but was revived in 1971 by Masahiko Nomi, with his publication of a book titled Understanding Affinity by Blood Type. His book became a best seller but was said to have a very unclear methodology.
  • The result for the number of hobbies/sports they do does satisfy the statement that people with blood type B enjoy being active and envolved in a number of different activities.
  • However the difference is very small ---- therefore it shows that blood types have no or only little effect on this aspect.
  • This aspect may have been influenced by the environment we live in, because in this culture we are strongly encouraged to participate in different activities.

Type O

Type AB

  • 'Split personalities', unpredictable, calm & controlled (like A), social & outgoing (like B), rational, analytical, truthful
  • bad traits: critical, rude, unpredictable
  • Social, cheerful, kind, talkative, motivating, peaceful, emotional
  • likes to group people together and stimulate good relationships
  • often focus on one goal or activity
  • accept & adapt to a new environment easily
  • bad traits: stubborn, careless, rude, jealous, arrogant
  • The results show that people with blood type A generally have 'type A' personalities and people with blood type B and O had 'type B/O' personalities.
  • This supports the theory, despite the fact that it is disagreed by scientists.
  • However the difference is not very big and there is only a small number of people surveyed and few question asked, so this experiment may not be very accurate.

Conclusion

In conclusion the theory that blood types can have and effect on our personalities has no scientific evidence and is disagreed ny scientists, but it has been supported by several different experiments, including my survey.
