What is Social Structure?

Patterns of relationships in a group

People learn from others where the mental map of social structure.

Mental Map: Not born with, learned.

Mental Map = Roles & Statuses

Status

A position a person occupies within a social structure

  • Role that one plays in a group.
  • Rank appointed or earned. (Achieved)
  • Some acquired at birth & not earned or chosen. (Ascribed)
  • Girl born becomes a DAUGHTER, GRAND-DAUGHTER.

What is the Status Set ?

A status set is a collection of social statuses that an individual holds. A person may have status of a daughter, wife, mother, student, worker, church member and a citizen.

Every status brings different roles / expectations.

What is a role?

Each status has its own set of role requirements. Social groups operates harmoniously and effectively to the extent that performance conform to the role requirements. Role is sociologically important because it demonstrates how individual activity is socially determined and thus follows a regular patterns.

ROLE CONFLICT

A condition in which the performance of a role

in one status interferes with the performance

of a role in another status.

ROLE STRAIN

A condition in which the roles of a single

status are inconsistent or conflicting.

What is your Status Set?

  • Label each status in your status as ascribed, or achieved.
  • Pictures with and explanation of your role.
