"The Drawbridge Keeper" is based off of a old folk tale where a drawbridge keepers son gets hit by a train after looking for his dad. You could say that it takes place in England or really anywhere that there is a drawbridge.
The meaning of this poem is, you don't have to be high ranking or rich to be a hero. The last two stanzas describe how Drecker was not a king or Lord, but was in fact poor, but he still was honorable and noble because he had a good heart.
Metaphor: The gate-like bridge that seemed a gate of death.
Personification: like a moan of pain, was heard the whistle of the coming train.
Personification: Came the swift engine, puffing its white breath.
The poem is made up of seven stanzas, consisting of six lines each.
Rhyme scheme: A,B,A,B,C,C
In "The Drawbridge Keeper" Drecker is the keeper of the bridge. His son is looking over the edge of the opening, when Drecker realizes a train is approaching. His son falls off the edge and Drecker is forced to make a decision, save his son or close the bridge to save the people on the train. He ends up saving the train, which results in the death of his son.
The speaker of "The Drawbridge Keeper" is not a main character. It is explained like the speaker has seen the event happen, but was not involved in it directly.
