Results from list 2

Subject 1: 20/25

Subject 2: 23/25

Subject 3: 20/25

All 3 subjects said list 2 was easier to recall because the words in that list could be placed into categories making recall much easier.

I then asked them to do the same procedure with list 2.

List 1: 20 words

Nine Swap Cell Ring Lust Plugs

Lamp Apple Table Sway Army

Clock Horse Color Baby Sword

Desk Hold Find Bird Rock

Experiment

I asked 3 people to look at list 1 for 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes, I asked them to then write down how many words they could recall from list 1.

After each list I would then see how many words they could recall.

Short- Term Memory Test

By: Sarah Lemke

Why do this Experiment?

What is Chunking

In this course so far we have talked about memory. I wanted to do an experiment to research how well our short-term memory works, and if strategy of "chunking" helps a person recall more words than without chunking.

Chunking is a memory strategy that involves taking individual units of information and grouping them into larger units.

Research Question

How many words from a list can someone memorize in two minutes.

One list is complied with completely random words

The other list is complied with words that fall under the category of either a color, animal, or object in a school

Going Further...

To take this experiment further I could change the words in each list in several ways. I could make 1 list geared towards males while the other is geared towards females. Another way to change up this experiment would be to test people in age groups to see how certain ages compare to others. I could also increase or decrease the times to give people time to memorize the words.

Results from List 1

Subject 1 Recall: List 1: 11/20

Subject commented that recalling these words were hard because they were random and there was no connection to other words in the list.

Subject 2: List 1: 14/20

Subject 2 noted that for list one they started to make up a story using the words to help memorize the words because they were random.

Subject 3: List 1: 7/20

Subject 3 commented that list 1 was very hard for them to recall because of the randomness of the words.

List 2: 25 Words

Horse Cat Dog Fish Bird Orange
