The Set-Up:

Information (cont.)

  • Upon seeing her, Cupid can't bring himself to shoot his arrows of love at Psyche. Instead, he shoots himself.
  • Meanwhile, Psyche's father is concerned that Psyche will never get a husband.
  • He consults a prophet of Apollo for help.
  • The prophet instructs: to bring Psyche up a hill, lock her in a tower, and she will marry a serpent, not a man
  • But family follows instructions to not anger the gods.
  • Psyche is locked away. She falls asleep in loneliness.

Human Motives To Create Myth:

  • To show that human imperfectness can be put aside and fixed for what you want
  • Love can bring the biggest joys.
  • Follow your goals and never stop going.

What is Revealed about Greek culture:

  • Love is complicated, but a great motivator.
  • Women are people that should be seen as beautiful, but dangerous.
  • Trust is something earned, not taken.

Even More Information

The Motives:

Plot and Themes

The Plan:

  • Psyche, the youngest daughter of three for a king, held great beauty to her skin.
  • Aphrodite was easily forgotten, her temples deserted, her worshipers vanishing.
  • This angered Aphrodite, calling her son Cupid to make the girl fall in love with the most despicable creature.

Role of Fate/Destiny/Free Will/Prophecies:

  • A prophecy by an oracle of Apollo said that Psyche would marry a monster, but the role of free will gave Psyche Cupid as her husband.
  • The destiny of Psyche was supposed to be tragic, but when successful, the jealousy factor arose.

Symbols:

  • A butterfly - an uneasy and hard to explain change in a person completely
  • A dog - always chasing their tails until they succeed at getting it
  • A dog and cat - seen as don't belong together, but finds a way to make it work no matter what people say against them in the case

Who Done IT?

How it Relates to Today

  • Psyche wakes up right in front of a mansion, carried by gentle Zephyr breezes.
  • Husband to never show face, remains hidden, but Psyche is comforted by voice
  • In desperation, granted a visit from sisters.
  • Sisters warn: husband using her, actually a beast, going to kill her after some time
  • How do the sisters know this? Jealousy is a great liar.
  • Psyche tempted to take a look. One night...
  • Summary: Cupid and Psyche is a tale of love, where one's love is a craving worth wandering, venturing, and sacrificing for.
  • Themes:
  • 1. Love and Trust - "Love cannot exist where trust doesn't."
  • 2. Jealousy- the extensive amount of power from jealousy
  • 3. Selfishness - Psyche starts as not so selfish, but changes to a selfish character to see Cupid for herself and to steal Persephone's beauty.

  • Love isn't the smoothest process. It has it's ups and downs, but most of the time, in the end, love has found its way to heal something rough back to smooth.
  • Never give up what you believe in. A goal is always blocked by obstacles, and every time you fall down, you just have to get back up. It's your life. There's no backing down.
  • Disney Princesses! (Inspiration) Cinderella - two jealous sisters... Beauty and the Beast - A "monster" they couldn't see but loved... Sleeping Beauty - Curiosity killed the cat...
  • Romeo & Juliet - How family limitations couldn't stop what the heart and guts said to do first and foremost for love

Playing with the Big Guns

The Mistake:

  • Armed with a knife and a candle, Psyche gets out of bed late at night to sneak a look and ready to kill.
  • Hot wax of candle falls on Cupid's shoulder, waking and hurting him.
  • "Love cannot exist where trust can't." Cupid leaves and returns to his mother.
  • Psyche regrets it. Starts on a quest to find Cupid, promises to keep searching even if she never ends up finding him.
  • Cupid went straight to Olympus to confront Zeus of his problems
  • Zeus calls for a full assembly of the gods: announces that Cupid and Psyche were getting married
  • All gods agreed and Psyche was bestowed with immortality, becomes minor goddess of soul
  • Aphrodite's Reaction: agreed to the marriage because now that Psyche lived in heaven, she would no longer interfere with the worship of mankind to her
  • Psyche (meaning Soul) and Cupid (Eros - love) lived happily ever after! :)

Okay. So, this may of been a more boring and typical performance/lecture, but we're going to wrap it up strong.

The following video is a summary of Cupid and Psyche (see if you can get the references!).

We did make complete fools of ourselves producing this and hopefully you guys laugh along.

Cupid and Psyche

The Aftermath

The Desperate Measures:

  • After fully healing, Cupid leaves his chambers in search for Psyche, who was laying in front of the castle
  • Cupid put sleep back into the box and pricked Psyche with an arrow to wake her
  • After being scolded, Psyche hastens to return the box to Aphrodite.
  • Cupid fled to his mother, and when she heard of his awful story that he had chosen Psyche, Aphrodite left her son in a room in pain
  • After timeless searching, Psyche went straight to Aphrodite and offered herself to her as a servant.
  • Aphrodite went to take revenge over the girl, giving her ridiculous tasks to do if she ever wanted to see Cupid again, who was left to suffer in a room while Psyche ran around crazy with tasks

TASK 5: Proserpine's Beauty

TASK 1: Sort the Beans

Objective: From Hades' wife, ask for beauty to put in a box for Aphrodite, who claimed to be in desperation for taking care of her son

Psyche's Cheat: a guide in a tower foretold everything she need to do (ex. pay Charon a penny, give cake to Cerebus)

Psyche's Result: Curiosity brought her to open the box of beauty from Proserpine, after she filled it. But there was nothing there. And she fell into a deep, deep, sleep.

Objective: Sort from a large quantity of small beans (ex. wheat, millet, poppy) into piles of individual seed types

Psyche's Cheat: an army of ants arrived to help the "poor maiden" sort the beans

Aphrodite's Reaction: very angry that she had done it, expected her not to...

TASK 4: Fill a Flask from the River of Death (Styx)

TASK 2: Survive the Night

Objective: survive the night only on a crust of a piece of bread

Aphrodite's Actions: walk over to fragrant couch to sleep on

hard labor + half starvation = lose beauty

Objective: From a cliff of tall heights and sleek rocks, retrieve water for the gushing river below, impossible unless you can fly

Psyche's Cheat: an eagle with poised wings and a strong beak

Aphrodite's Reaction: angry for all of the help, and some stupidity to keep going

TASK 3: Run Down Vicious Sheep With Golden Coats

Story Written By: Apuleius

(Latin writer of second century A.D.)

Objective: Collect the golden, shining wool from the sheep across the river

Psyche's Cheat: a green reed that prevents Psyche from drowning herself from pain and despair in the river; also advises her to collect wool from the thorny briars that collect them in the evening

Aphrodite's Reactions: shocked, and still at it, demands more insane tasks
