Start of the games
Tributes must stay on the platform for sixty seconds.
A large structure called the Cornucopia holds many weapons and supplies to help in the games.
*Katniss wants to get a bow but realizes its too risky and gets a pack and a tarp instead.
Once in the woods...
-Katniss focuses mainly on water and shelter.
-While she watches for others, she finds safety in a willow tree.
-While up in the tree, she hears crackling. Someone near has made a fire.
-Soon she finds out that a group is near (Career tributes alliance) and they kill the girl who made the fire.
...What shocks her most is that she hears Peeta along with the alliance.
It reveals the competition and threat Katniss feels towards Peeta being on the alliance against her. Its also the first chapter to begin the actual games. Towards the end, she realizes that Peeta may have to be one of targets.

Summary of the Chapter
- After cylinder tubes lead the tributes into the games arena, each one must stand on their platform for sixty seconds.
- Once that time is up all the tributes run towards the Cornucopia.
- Katniss wants to get the bow from the cornicopia but she is only able to get a pack and a tarp.
- Eleven die on the first day.
- Katniss climbs into a tree and explores what is in the backpack she found.
- After seeing the recap of the day, Katniss is relieved to know Peeta is still alive.
- The Career tributes have made an alliance.
- Peeta is also in this alliance.
