Tray Setup

  • Amalgam restorations are chemically safe
  • Highly effective and long lasting
  • When dealing with multi-surface decay, amalgam is the most reliable
  • The procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to complete
  • After restoration is completed, wait 2-3 hours before eating on the filling. Especially crunchy foods
  • Numbing will wear off in approximately an hour
  • Having good oral hygiene is extremely important when you have an amalgam restoration, which includes brushing correctly twice a day and flossing at least once a day
  • Basic Setup (Mouth Mirror, Explorer, and cotton pliers)
  • Articulating paper holder
  • Spoon Excavator
  • Amalgam carrier
  • Condenser
  • Hollenback
  • Discoid-Cleoid Carver
  • Burnisher
  • On side: cottons rolls, high-speed handpiece, dental dam material/clamps/clamp forceps, amalgam capsule, amalgam well

Steps Needed for the Procedure

Materials and Instruments Used

Signs an Amalgam restoration is needed

  • 1) Check Occlusion
  • 2) Isolate tooth (typically a Dental Dam)
  • 3)Decay is removed using a high-speed handpiece
  • 4)Amalgam is mixed and loaded into the amalgam carrier for placement
  • 5)Amalgam is placed and condensed
  • 6)The Discoid-Cleoid carver is then used to carve the tooth back to original anatomy
  • 7)The burnisher is used to smooth the surface where the Amalgam was placed
  • 8)The occlusion is then checked again
  • Basic setup
  • Condenser
  • Discoid-Cleoid Carver
  • Amalgam capsule
  • Amalgam carrier
  • High-speed handpiece
  • Dental Dam
  • Burnisher
  • Amalgamator
  • Amalgam well
  • Articulating paper and holder
  • Spoon Excavator
  • On tooth #30, when there is decay on the proximal areas, it is considered a Class II.
  • Typically on molars and other posterior teeth, amalgam restorations are common since appearance is not as important as anterior teeth.
  • Amalgam is typically chosen if the tooth needing restorations is multi-surface or big.
