Here's Why...

  • We do not have two conditions that are required
  • Therefore we cannot calculate the medians of the sample.

Participants

Sampling

Opportunity

Pros:

  • Easy
  • Not time consuming

Cons:

  • Researcher bias- ppts can be picked by the researcher
  • Not representative

Type of Experiment

  • 5 participants

  • 16-18 year olds

  • Females

This is where everything went a bit pear-shaped

Choosing a Statistical Test

  • Difference
  • Ordinal
  • Unrelated Data

Mann-Whitney U

Lab Experiment

Pros:

  • Provide a high control of variables
  • Easily replicated- because of standardised instructions

Cons:

  • Low ecological validity
  • Can result in the experiment lacking mundane realism- artificial stimuli

Standardised Instructions

Materials

  • PowerPoint presentation with 20 individual people

  • Laptop

  • Response sheet

Informed Consent

1. Please take a seat

2. You will be shown a presentation containing 20 pictures of females and males

3. Each picture will be shown for 10 seconds

4. Your task is to rate their physical attractiveness from 1-5 on the response sheet on your desk

a) 1 represents ‘not at all attractive’ whilst 5 represents ‘extremely attractive’.

5. Once the presentation is over, please hand in your response sheet to the investigator

6. Please be entirely honest. Your responses are entirely confidential and will remain anonymous. They will not be discussed with anyone other than the researchers as they are purely for the purpose of this study

7. You have the right to withdraw yourself and your results at any point during or after the study

Control of Variables

Control:

  • Same instructions
  • Same set of pictures
  • Similar image backgrounds
  • Ethnicity of couples
  • Sexual orientation of couples

Dependent: Rate of physical attractiveness on a Likert scale from 1 to 10.

Variables

  • Investigator Effects- Standardisation
  • Extraneous Variables- highly controlled condition

However, in choosing our romantic partner we don’t always choose the person who is most physically attractive but somebody who matches our own level of attractiveness.

The Matching Hypothesis

  • An explanation of the formation of relationships.
  • Values physical attractiveness
  • Deems it as very important for partner selection.

Independent: Pictures of romantic partners

Aim and Hypothesis

Aim: To test the matching hypothesis

Hypothesis: People are more likely to match two people according to their level of attractiveness thus proving the matching hypothesis correct
