Literary Devices!

Onomatopoeia imitates a specific sound

The bulldozer going "crash! boom! bang!" on the hard metal ground.

Personification makes a running shoe cry

As it slams the pavement passing by.

Simile compares two things using like or as

His performance was as cool as jazz.

Consonance is the itty bitty mouse

Trying to catch the kitty in the house.

Hyperbole exaggerates anything

Her tears came down like a giant fountain as she heard him sing.

Without using like or as, Metaphors compare two things

Their costumes were sparkling golden rings.

There are many literary devices you can use in poems some of them are simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, consonance, assonance, alliteration, hyperbole and rhyme. Literary devices make the poem more unique and interesting to read.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was one of the most famous poets of all times. He has his own type of poem that is called the Shakespearean Sonnet. This is a poem that is a fourteen line stanza that consists of three quatrans and a couplet. In Shakespeare's lifetime he wrote 154 sonnets.

Shall i compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too shaort a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed,

And every fair from fair sametime declines,

By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possesion of that fair thou ow'st,

Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,

So long an men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Who is loving, cautious and compassionate

Who is sister of Andrea

Who loves dance, sparkles and birthdays

Who feels loved, confident and humorous

Who needs family, friends and care

Who gives assistance, fun and love

Who fears insects, lightening and boats

Who would like to see a shooting star in the night sky

Who shares knowledge and laughter

Extended Metaphor poem

Tears are like rose petals,

Plunged to the floor in a sorrowful way.

What was once a vibrant bloom,

Now droops brokenhearted.

Unwanted and unwelcome tears and rose petals slip to the floor.

Tears can be melancholy when they appear from drearyness,

But rose petals can be bedazzling when they first blossom from their buds.

Together, tears and rose petals drift the the floor with both gloomyness and blistfulness.

SLAM Poetry

Dancing takes hard work, determiantion and strength

Always facing difficulties when you can't reach a certain length.

Whether it's a turn or a jump, there will always be a bump on the road,

Like, people improving and you not moving,

Stuck in the world of the unworthy,

The unworthy to shine like a star.

Thankfully, unworthiness comes to an end,

With persevearence and the strive for perfection.

Taking pride in performing your talents and skills,

Makes the effort worthwhile.

Along with grace, balance and poise,

Dance is demanding, daring and delightful.

Slam poetry can be used to expess feelings. It is a good way for people to be interested in your opinions.

Poetry is a good way of expressing your feelings and thoughts. "All good poetry comes from the heart and soul."

Lyric Poetry

Lyric poetry is poetry in song form.

It has special meaning if we really listen to the lyrics in a song. This type of poetry can mean something something special to you or it can be an obvious message in the song.
