Olympic Beach Volleyball

  • Beach volleyball was introduced in the Olympics as an official sport in 1996.

  • 6 players on each side of the court.
  • Only one serve is allowed.
  • Positions were established.
  • The limit of hits each side can make changed to three.
  • Four out of five matches determined the winner of the game.
  • There wasn't a limit of how many players can play on each team.

  • There wasn't a limit on how many times you could hit the ball on each side.
  • The game was played by "innings" nine innings with three outs per inning.

Fédération Internationale de Volleyball is the international governing body for the sport of indoor, beach, and grass volleyball.

volleyball is more popular for girls than for boys.

  • The United States Volleyball Association was formed in 1928 which later became USA Volleyball.
  • They made the rules and are responsible for teams that compete in FIVB and Olympic Volleyball.
  • Only 23 states reported any boys participation in high school volleyball. Texas, Washington, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota and Indiana have no boys’ high school volleyball at all
  • At the college level, volleyball is a popular NCAA sport, mainly for women also. The number of mens volleyball players are less than one-tenth of women’s participation.
