Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions.
There are several different models. A well-known one is the Salovey and Mayer model, which describes emotional intelligence as the ability to perceieve emotions, integrate emotions to facilitate thought, understand emotions, and regulate emotions to promote personal growth (Salovey and Mayer 1994).
This form is questioned as being classed as an intelligence, but rather a skill as it is simply a part of general intelligence, including the ability to deal with life situations and emotions.
