Although the author nor the date is known, the poem is said to have appeared in a late tenth-century manuscript in Northern Italy. The Dream of the Rood, is considered one of the finest religious poems in Anglo-Saxon literature.
The Dreamer- The dreamer, starts off narrating the poem. He talks about what he saw in the dream, which was the rood with a blood stain. We get the sense that he is an outsider, and looks forward towards heaven.
The Rood- The rood, describes what happened to it, which was the crucifixion. It describes what was happening to Jesus as he was being nailed to the cross. Once this happens, it is like they both become one. They both suffered to win the fight over hell.
The poem, Dream of the Rood, is about a dreamer who describes their dream about the crucifixion, and what it represents. The poem then shifts into the perspective of the rood, or cross. It describes what happened, and the significance of the crucifixion. Towards the end of the poem, the narrator is once again the dreamer. He explains how significant that event is for him, and how he looks forward to heaven .
The major theme of The Dream of the Rood, is the representation of the crucifixion as a battle. Both Christ and the Cross triumph over defeat, they are seen as heroic. In the end, they are both worshiped because of what they signify.
