Mixed Deafness

`

Sensori-neural Deafness

  • A combination of both conductive & sensori-neural deafness. This means the child has a glue ear & have a problem in their cochlea at the same time.

Prenatal Deafness

  • Often referred to as 'nerve deafness' even though its not completely true. This is caused by a fault in the inner ear or auditory nerve, but mostly caused by a problem in the cochlea. This is due to the fact that the hair cells of the cochlea are not working properly. Sensori-neural deafness is permanent.

Causes of deafness

Conductive Deafness

  • Many are born deaf due to genetic reasons. Even if you don't recall anybody in your family being born deaf, it still can be genetic. Another reason children are born with deafness is due to complications during pregnancy. There are a few illnesses that can cause children to be born deaf, such as rubella, toxoplasmoids, & herpes.
  • Often referred to as Otitis Media, it's the most common type. It means the sounds cannot pass through the other & middle ear to the cochlea & auditory nerve efficiently. It is cause by fluid building up in the middle ear. It's mostly temporary but can be permanent sometimes.

Postnatal Causes

  • Being born prematurely can increase the risk of being deaf or becoming deaf. In early childhood many infections cause deafness like meningitis, measles & mumps. There is also some medicines, know as ototoxic drugs, that can damage the hearing system of babies before birth or cause infections in the hearing system after birth.

Types of deafness

What is deafness ?

Treatment

Deafness & hearing loss are often mistaken as to be the same, but they're both different. Hearing loss &/or disorders make it difficult to hear but not impossible, also it happens after birth. Deafness keeps you from hearing at all & you are born with it.

Detections of Deafness

  • There is no treatment that can cure deafness, but children born deaf can get or use many different methods to make life easier for them, such as cochlear implants. Cochlear implants are medical devices that are surgically implanted into the ear that can help a deaf person here different sounds & perhaps understand speech. Also the child can learn to read lips or sign language.

Bibliography Citation

  • There is really no way to check if a child will be born deaf. After a child is born, the hospital does a newborn screening that helps check for serious but rare conditions at birth, such as blood, hearing & heart screening, before the newborn leaves the hospital. If a child fails the hearing screening, the doctors will need to screen he/she again to make sure before determining ways to help the child be able to learn while being deaf.

  • Mostly always genetic but can sometimes be caused by infections & taking drugs.
  • About 3 in 1,000 (12,000) babies are affected with deafness every year in the United States.
