Is Janet imagining all these events? Or are they just products of the fear instilled in her, because of the storm and loneness?
The Storm is a thriller short story that takes readers through the suspenseful events. The title of the story,The Storm, already sets the mood for the reader,as the cliche "dark and stormy night"comes to mind.
The story is narrated with 3rd person point of view.
In conclusion, there is a large amount of ambiguity in the story.
The Storm-symbolizes the outside world and it is ironic that the storm in the beginning is the origin of all the fearJanet experiences but at the end,it becomes her safe heaven.

Janet's Imagination
Ben's coat-symbolizes Ben's strength and protection.
The House-represents the life that she has,and the place where she feels safe.
It is pretty difficult to imagine a full body, with a ring on it. She also recognized the same ring on Ben's hand while he was reaching for her.
Janet makes a big deal about the empty envelope, making sure to throw it away so it does not upset Ben.This can be interpreted as Janet over thinking the situation and gives light to her mental state.
Janet looked into the trunk "for a long moment", while "each detail of its content imprinted itself on her brain like an image on a film. Each tiny detail was indelibly clear and never to be forgotten."
Her fear builds up due to the events that shake her. Thus, resulting in her imagining the body.
The trunk was empty when she looked again with Ben.
If Ben was the murderer, he could have enough time to cleaned and hid the body elsewhere before he called Janet down.
