Doping creates negative consequences not only on the individual level (lasting health damages, for example) but also frictions in total (such as loss of media interest) that both contribute to the loss of integrity in sport

WHY DO ATHLETES DOPE?

Corruption in general, and doping in particular, are present in both amateur and professional sports and have started to ruin the integrity of sports in general. Blood doping creates unfair advantages. Doping distorts the level playing field in sports and competition. With higher stakes involved, cheating techniques such as doping have become more prevalent.

WHY WAS LANCE ARMSTRONG NOT

CAUGHT EARLIER?

Substances that do not occur naturally in the body and those where wide varieties of analytical laboratory tests are available are easily caught by the WADA, for example anabolic steroids, diuretics, stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine

Those substances and methods in which have a naturally occuring component in the body provide significant analytical testing challenges for testers, for example testosterone, erythropoietin, blood transfusions, human growth hormone and corticosteroids.

Admitted to the use of steroids and erythropoietin (EPO)

EPO is a naturally occurring hormone in the body that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. It is a hormone given to patients with anemia or malfunctioning bone marrow to help restore their RBC count and energy levels. But, inject it into an elite athlete (like Lance Armstrong) and the extra oxygen increases their aerobic capacity. When more oxygen in present, fermentation of the pyruvate molecules will never occur, meaning no lactic acid will build up and your muscles will take a longer time to become fatigued.

A BRIEF HISTORY

After competing in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, Lance Armstrong became a professional cyclist. In 1996, he underwent surgery and chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer. Between 1999 and 2005, Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times. He retired from cycling in 2005 but came back in 2009 before retiring for a second time 2 years later.

Blood doping changes the way your blood carries oxygen to the rest of your body, resulting in an increased risk of heart failure, stroke, kidney damage, high blood pressure, blood clotting and heart attacks

TYPES OF BLOOD DOPING

Autologous blood doping:

most commonly this involves the removal of two pints of the athletes blood several weeks prior to competition. The blood is then frozen until 1-2 days before the competition, when it is thawed and injected back into the athlete.

Homologous blood doping:

the injection of fresh blood, removed from a second person, straight into the athlete.
