The role of the Roman Catholic Church in New France

The Bishop

Jesuits in New France

First Missionary Sent From New France

*In 1615 Joseph Le Caron was the first missionary sent to the Hurons. His intentions were to go the Huron traders and go with them to their own country.

The Church held a very influential position in the government of the Royal Colony. The Bishop was one of the three most important members of the Sovereign council. This meant that Church opinions were taken into consideration when ever decisions about the colony were being made.

In 1625 the Recollets work was turned over to The Jesuits, a more powerful religious order. The Jesuits arrived in New France in 1625, they established a college for the sons of settlers Quebec in 1635. They established hospitals, and convents by bringing groups of Nuns to New France.

The Jesuits

The Roman Catholic Church in New France.

The church played an important role in the development of the colony. In addition to providing spiritual leadership

it was influential in the government and in education. It provided comfort for the sick, the poor, and the helpless, and contributed to everyday life in the parishes.

The members are called Jesuits. The society is engaged in converting people to Christianity and Apostolic ministry in 112 nations on six continents. Jesuits work in education (founding schools, colleges, universities and seminaries), intellectual research, and cultural pursuits. Jesuits also give retreats, minister in hospitals and parishes, and promote social justice and ecumenical dialogue.
