FDR utilized the radio to give fire side chats to citizens, in order to inform and comfort them during the Great Depression.

The Internet is today's quintessential form of media. It provides an unlimited source of information and connects people like never before. Some internet facts include:

  • Social media (ex. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
  • Six in ten Americans regularly use the Internet as there source of media.
  • The Internet made news more accessible to people worldwide.
  • In 1940, NBC's experimental television station began simulcasting Lowell Thomas's radio news reports.
  • CBS began regularly scheduled TV newscasts in 1941 but stopped when the United States entered World War II.

Radio dramatically changed journalism, by allowing citizens to receive news much faster than ever before.

Some examples include:

  • First aired radio station, KDKA in Pittspurgh, covered the 1920 Presidential election on Nov 2.
  • FDR did fire side chats during the great depression.
  • Radio provided entertainment, such as coverage on "Beatlemania," in addition to the news.

Edward R. Murrow

  • Edward R. Murrow was the best-known broadcaster of World War II.
  • When television emerged, Murrow's "integrity, honesty, and diligence set the standard for network news."
  • His career also foreshadowed future battles broadcast journalists would face: accusation of bias, and the price of tackling controversial subjects.
  • He contributed to the end of "McCarthyism" and the Red Scare

Bloomberg News

  • Micheal Bloomberg started Bloomberg LP as a financial information service that provided real time digital data to investors.
  • The Bloomberg television data combines live video, real time stock prices, and news reports. This revolutionized the way electronic news was packaged.
  • In 1957, Central High School, in Little Rock, Ark, televised the first integration of race at a high school. This event propelled the Civil Rights Movement.
  • In 1963, the assassination of President JFK was caught on air, and for the first time, Americans saw history unfold in real time.
  • In 1986, the explosion of the Challenger was filmed live on CNN.
