Robert Gould Shaw was born October 10, 1837 in Boston Massachusetts. He attended college, but dropped out to fight in the American Civil War. During the war he led the first all Black regiment of soldiers, the 54th Massachessetts Infantry. He died on July 18, 1863 while leading a charge against a confederate fort.
