  • On the ship she learned that Sawyer gave ownership of their kids to Molly who was a free woman.
  • When Harriet got her freedom, she was encouraged by her brother John, to offer her talents to the organization of antislavery movements.
  • She then shared her expediences in a book(Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl her autobiography). After the Civil War she worked in the Quaker relief efforts in Georgia and Virginia, distributing clothing and seeds, teaching, and caring for the sick and wounded.

Also, her daughter became one of the organizers of the National Association of Colored Women in 1896

Harriets Life:

  • Harriet said it was a nightmare at the Norcom's. -For instance, Mrs. Norcom sent her on a long errand in the snow without shoes.
  • Later that year her father died
  • Then, her Grandmother Molly's mistress, also Mrs. Norcom's mother, promised to free Molly in her will.
  • But when she died, Dr. Norcom decided to have her sold instead.
  • Finally, when Molly was on the auction block the mistress's sister marked an "X" on the bill of sale and gave Molly her freedom.

Citations:

  • Harriet lived under the floorboard for one year.
  • Norcom made a $100 reward for who can ever find her, and then put her two kids, her Aunt Betty, and her brother John at his own expense to force them to reveal her hiding spot.
  • But that didn't work. So when Norcom found out that Harriet was in New York(not really) he went after her looking but since that and keeping them in jail would be so expensive
  • Sawyer asked to buy them all from Norcom and he said yes. They were in jail for sixty days. So they had planned to get Harriet a sailor costume and put her on a ship, but when that got risky they moved her to a den in Molly's attic and she got to see her kids.
  • She lived there for seven years
  • When Aunt Betty died, Harriet had nobody to talk to.

Harriet's Early Life:

Her journey

  • Harriet was treated very poorly. 15 year old Harriet was raped by 50 year old Dr. Norcom.
  • Later on, Harriet was in a relationship with a white man named Sawyer and they had a baby named Joseph.
  • He then offered to buy Harriet but Norcom rejected.
  • They later had another daughter named Louisa. But when Norcom found out that she was pregnant he chopped off all her hair with rough shears.
  • One day Mr. Norcom proposed a single condition for there freedom- that Harriet to stop all contact with Sawyer- Harriet didn't believe him.
  • Harriet's family made a living by carpentry supporting themselves like they were free men, even though they had to pay their owner $200 a year for the privilege.
  • After Harriet's mother died in 1819, she finally realized that she was someone else's property.
  • Later, after Harriet's mistress died, she got a new owner, Dr. and Mrs. Norcom.
  • Harriet and her daughter Louisa(age 3) were sent to work on a plantation for Mr. Norcom's son. Her son was sick the day there were going so he stayed back with Harriet's grandmother Molly.
  • Later Louisa got shingles and went to live with Molly and her brother.
  • When Harriet was at the plantation alone, all she could think of was her family and escape. So she jumped out of the window and ran to Molly's house to see her kids and to see Molly.
  • When she got there they planned for her to stay at Molly's friend(a slave owner) under the floorboard in her Kitchen.
