The Beginning...

We have no:

  • consciousness
  • choice
  • guilt
  • blame

We inherit without permission:

  • bias
  • stereotyping
  • prejudice,
  • habits
  • tradition
  • a history of oppression

Information about social identity and power is

  • limited
  • misinformed
  • not existing

Shaped by

  • by people we love and trust
  • taught to play our roles
  • follow rules

Teaches us:

  • our self concepts
  • self perceptions
  • how we see others
  • dreams
  • values
  • expectations

We get mixed messages

feel confused and

guilty for not

understanding

Consciously and unconsciously bombarded with messages about who should have power and who should not

by institutions:

  • education
  • religion
  • medicine
  • law
  • criminal justice
  • government
  • social services
  • business

This socialization leads to bad outcomes for both people in power and without power:

  • Misperceptions
  • dissonance
  • silence
  • stress
  • collusion
  • inequality
  • anger
  • guilt
  • hate
  • self hate
  • self distructive behaviors
  • violence
  • crime
  • internalization of patterns of power for future

We do nothing and cycle continues

We live with or promote status quo

we don't think, challenge, or question what's wrong

The Cycle of Socialization

Bobbie Harro

We are born into a specific identities related to the categories of difference:

• gender

• ethnicity

• skin color

• first language

• age

• ability status

• religion

• sexual orientation

• economic class

First Socialization

Born into world with oppression already in place

Institutional and cultural socialization

The Core

And by our culture:

  • media
  • language
  • patterns of thought
  • holidays
  • song lyrics

Keeps us in this cycle

Ignorance

Insecurity

Confusion

Obliviousness

Fear

The Continuation

Results

Enforcements

Direction for Change

Toward Liberation

System of reward and punishments keeps us playing by the rules

follow rules = sanctioned

rebel against rules = punished, persecuted, stigmatized, and victimized by discrimination

Something makes us begin to think/challenge/question the system

We begin to see something is wrong with this picture
