By the early 1900s, the Lighthorsemen were reduced to a small peacekeeping group. They still enforce the Choctaw laws to the best of their ability in Oklahoma. One of the Lighthorsemen troops is selected to serve in the Tribal Court System.
The Lighthorsemen were designated to settle disputes and enforce the Choctaw laws. They had the jurisdiction to arrest, try, and prosecute violators of the tribal laws. However, in the mid-1800s, they lost all legal jurisdiction, but were still able to perform arrests.
As mentioned previously, this treaty organized the Choctaw police force and their federal funding. In 1820, this treaty outlined the relocation of Choctaw Native Americans and provided funding for schools and hunting supplies.
The Choctaw Lighthorsemen were the law enforcement system in the Choctaw Nation. They were described as "hard fighting" and "sharp shooting."
The US government supported the organization of the Lighthorsemen by setting aside an appropriation for $600 annually to fund them. The Lighthorsemen and their federal funding were created in the 1820 Treaty of Doak's Stand.
