Review

I liked the way this book showed a lot of different things in a teenagers life all at once such as school, sports, family, popularity, and love.

Quotes

"When practice was over, Coach pointed at Lincoln and said, "Mendoza, you're not playing tomorrow. You don't know how to hang." Lincoln looked up. "It's fine with me. Lincolns going to win. Like in '70." "Whatta you talkin' 'bout?" "You know. When you played."

"What do you mean?" "Hombre, you know what I mean."

This shows coach what Lincoln knows about him that he doesn't want anyone else to find out

Major Conflict

Main Events #1

The main major conflict is between Lincoln and Coach Yesutis with Lincoln being hurt but coach still making him play and the Franklin game in 1970 that Roy told Lincoln about so coach wanted to beat Franklin. Eventually coach put Lincoln in so they might be able to win but they still ended up losing.

Lincoln met a girl named Monica, she used to go to Franklin like him and played basketball there. They went to a small outside court on a Sunday afternoon, while playing he fell and hurt his knee, making him unable to play basketball at all for a while.

Main Events #2

While Lincoln was home resting his knee, he woke up to noises coming from the kitchen, when he went to see what it was, he saw an intruder wearing a paint splattered shirt and jeans that looked new. Lincoln confronted him and the intruder quickly fled, this is the exact reason they left there old house.

Main Events #3

Setting

His new school

The big game between Franklin and Columbus didn't start off so well for Columbus by halftime Franklin was up 23-16 and by the time coach decided to put Lincoln in it was 45-39 Lincoln brought the team really close to the lead but in the end they lost 52-46.

Main Character

Columbus Junior High was a stucco group of pink and green buildings and a track the color of rust the grass was mostly brown and the trashcans buckled with cedar trees in front of the administrations office. A statue of Christopher Columbus with a telescope to his eye was in front of the school.

Lincoln Mendoza is a brown boy who lives in Sycamore, a mostly rich and mostly white suburb, he moved from a neighborhood of crime when his house got broken into and doesn't fit in all that well at his new school.
