The first Christian is killed for believing in Christ. This sets the stage of the 300 year long persecution of the Christians. The Church is underground, and therefore unable to spread its teachings.
The first Ecumenical Council is called in order to debate Arianism, a heresy. An Ecumenical Council is a gathering of all Catholic bishops, convened by the Pope and under his authority and guidance. (Notes). Arianism was ruled a heresy by the council, and Jesus's divinity was fully affirmed
"And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger [...]" (Luke 2:7) Jesus Christ, the Savior of Mankind, is born on 0 AD. He is both divine and human. Throughout his life, he spreads the word of God.
The Council of Ephesus was called after Nestorius proposed Mary should be called "Christ-bearer" rather than "God-bearer." This idea is known as Nestorianism, and states that Jesus is two seperate people, one human and one divine. Cyril of Alexandria opposed this, saying Jesus is one person with 2 natures. "Jesus is both fully human and fully divine." (Chapter 7, Embrace the Vision).
Christianity is declared legal, and the Church is able to surface. In the time of persecution, many new Christians were converted. Now that Christianity is legal, it attracts many new converts who wish to accept Christ's message.
In order to save Mankind, Jesus Christ is crucified on the cross and dies.
"When Jesus had received the wine, he said, 'It is finished.' Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." (John 19:30)
Through his death, Mankind is freed of Original Sin and is redeemed. He later rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven. Before his death, he gave control of the Church to his Apostles
The Council of Constantinople was called after Jesus's human nature was challenged by Apollarinis. Gregory of Nazianzus refuted this statement, and the belief that Jesus was not fully human was declared a heresy. Also at the Council of Constantinople, the Nicene Creed was finalized.
Arianism is a heresy, which is the conscious and deliberate rejection of a dogma of the Church.
"Arianism falsely taught that Jesus was not of the 'same substance' as God." (Chapter 7, Embrace the Vision).
Arianism was proposed by Arius, a priest who wanted to preserve the one-ness of God. He said that Jesus was created by God and therefore less than God. This was opposed by Athansius, a bishop who argued for the full divinity of Christ. Arianism was declared a heresy. The flaw with Arianism is that if Jesus is not God, God never has contact with humanity. (Notes).
