The Story Of My Life

By Helen Keller

So They Began Looking For Help

Kate and Captain Keller began looking for assistance. But as expected, no one was willing to help a child who is deaf AND blind

or at least they just couldn't.

At the age of six, she was taken by her parents to see Dr. Alexander Graham Bell.

It was a struggle, but eventually they found someone willing to help her.

Her name was Annie Sullivan. A mere student of Graham Bell

In March 1887, Sullivan traveled to Tuscumbia, Alabama, to work for the Keller family.

Helen was particularly difficult to teach.

not only was she stubborn but she practically ruled the house.

In Helen's eyes, she was the queen. Everything she says (or in this case, indicates) goes.

Everything seemed hopeless

Helen learns her first word

As a gift, Annie brings Helen a doll. This becomes the first word she learns. Doll. Annie took Her hand and spelled the word into Hellens hand using sign language

Unfortunately, Helen didn't care.

After a few frustrating days of trying to tolerate Helen, Annie takes her to a small house across the ranch and they spend a week there together alone

There, without the protection of her mother Helen is forced to learn.

Within about 3 days Helen learns to spell a few words.

  • Doll
  • water
  • cake

But something was wrong

Helen could spell the words, but she didn't know what they meant.

It wasn't until Annie placed her hand under running water while spelling out the word did Helen finally realize that everything had a name

Helen soon learned the fingertip alphabet and shortly afterward to write.

By the end of August, in six short months, she knew 625 words

After years of practice, and learning, Helen gets the opportunity to attend Radcliffe college.

Achievements

Keller went on to become a world-famous speaker and author. She is remembered as an advocate for people with disabilities amid numerous other causes.

she was a frequent contributor to magazines and newspapers, writing most frequently on blindness, deafness, socialism, social issues, and women's rights.

Keller also went on to win various awards.

Helen Keller died June 1 in 1968.

Keller was 87 years old.

It's said she died of natural causes. whether it was peacefully in her sleep or a heart attack.

Despite the tragedy of her death, Helen was never afraid of it. because she knew that when she went to heaven, she would finally be able to see and hear.

"She will live on, one of the few, immortal names not born to die. Her spirit will endure as long as man can read and stories can be told of the woman who showed the world there are no boundaries to courage and faith."

-Senator Lister Hill
