New Jersey's 4 Regions- NJ Social Studies Weekly Week 2

Important Vocabulary

Geographers- people who study the Earth's Surface.

Democracy- the type of government created for the people by the people.

Mount Everest- the tallest mountain in the world.

Pine Barrens Tree Frog- special species of tree frog found only in the Pine Barrens.

New Jersey Tourist Spots

The Piedmont Lowlands and The Atlantic Coastal Plain

Warren Township- Home to the Kirch-Ford House which was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

The Absecon Lighthouse- Built in 1857 this is the tallest lighthouse in NJ.

Monmouth Battlefield- General Washington fought here. His victory made Molly Pitcher famous for caring for the troops and then joining in the battle herself!

The Piedmont Lowlands: This area is East of the Highlands and home to the states largest river, the Raritan River. It is also the part of the state that shares a border with New York.

The Atlantic Coastal Plain: The southern most region of NJ. It includes the Pine Barrens and the coastline to the Atlantic Ocean and many beaches.

There are 4 Regions in NJ

  • The Appalachian Ridge
  • The NJ Highlands
  • The Piedmont Lowlands
  • The Atlantic Coastal Plain

Millville is in the Coastal Plain Region

The Appalachian Ridge and NJ Highlands

The Appalachian Ridge: includes mountains and valleys. This region is home to NJ's highest point called High Point which even has a state park named after it. It is also home to the Delaware Water Gap. This area is popular for rafting, swimming and fishing.

The New Jersey Highlands: This region is also called the NJ Uplands and is home to many lakes and rivers. The largest lake in this region is Lake Hopatcong. It is popular for its water sports.
