The story opens in the coastal village of La Paz on the Gulf of Mexico.Kino awakens on the early morning. The first thing Kino sees is the morning light coming into his brush house and he sees the hanging box where his infant son, Coyotito, sleeps.Next, he looks at his wife Juana beside him.
kino hears the music of the waves."The Song of the Family " comes into his mind. The song is clear and soft.
Juana gets up and starts to cook breakfast.Meanwhile,Kino puts on his sundals and steps outside the house. A goat approaches him. A moth flies into the light of the fire. A group of ants is in the sand. A thin dog rests near him. Before he returns inside Kino sees two roosters preparing for a fight in the yard and some doves flying to the hills.
After breakfast, Kino and Juana begin their day.Their attention is suddenly attracted by a deadly scorpion on the rope supporting Coyotito'hanging box.Kino slowly approaches the scorpion while Juana prays for protection.Unfortunately, the baby's laughter causes the rope to shake and the scorpion falls onto the baby's shoulder before Kino is able to catch the scorpion.
Juana gest the baby from the box and immediately sucks the poison from the wound. Hearing the sound of the screaming baby, the neighbors, including Kino's brother Juan Thomas and his wife Apolonia, come to Kino's brush house. Everyone worries about the baby's life. Juana asks that Kino bring the doctor to treat their first baby.Kino tells his wife that the doctor never comes to treat poor people. She responds that they must go to him. Kinn agrees. Everyone follows Kino and Juana to the doctor's house.
At the gate of the doctor's house. Kino hears the music of evil in his mind. Kino hesitates before he lifts the iron knocker on the gate. The servent opens the door a little bit and Kino says that his son is sick and needs a treatment. The servant tells Kino to wait and closes the door.
The doctor is fat and his voice is hoarse. He sees the Indians as animals. He doesn't care for people's lives but only money. When the servant tells the doctor of the Kino's request, the doctor asks if the little Indians have any money to pay his services. The servant returns to Kino who hands him several small, misshapen pearls of little value. After a time the servant returns the pearls to Kino and makes the excuse that the doctor has gone out to treat a serious case.
Kino stands at the doctor's shut gate for a time and the he strikes the iron gate with his fist which causes his knuckles to bleed.

Chapter 1 is the introduction of the novel. Readers get to know the setting, background ,main character and others in this chapter. Readers also feel the conflict between the buttom class and the upper class in society. It is like the head of a person. Anyway,
Chapter 1 is a good hook for the story.

4. Explain how the action in the plot fits one or all of the themes.
In our opinions, the novel's theme is that money is important, but money is not everything. We found the actions in chapter 1 fit the theme. When kino and Juana bring the baby to see the doctor, the doctor refuses to treat the baby unless he gets well paid. So in this case, money is important. In the beginning of the story, Steinbeck described that Kino lives in a brush house and eats the same corn cakes for breakfast everyday. This tells us that Kino is poor. But Kino hears the Song of the Family and the song is clear and soft. Kino is interested in watching the animal's activities such as a goat approaching him, a moth flying into the light of the fire, a group of ants in the sand, a fight between two roosters, and some doves flying to the hills .Through these descriptions, we know that Kino is happy and enjoys his life without money,. So money is not everything.
5.Examine and explain how the chapter fits your particular view of the novel.
In our particular view, "The pearl "talks about the conflict between the bottom class and the upper class in society. In chapter 1, we found that Kino and his people belong to the bottom class. The doctor and his people belong to the upper class. Both classes have a conflict with the payment for treating the baby.
Thank you for watching, hope you like it.
