Flame Tests

Qualitative tests for ions

Kahoot

Different cations (positively charged) go different colours when we heat them.

Ionic compounds consist of a cation and an anion

To work out what an ionic compound is we can do tests on the cation and the anion.

By putting the different compounds in fire work out what colour each cation goes.

Cation Tests

The cation is normally a metal. There are 2 different tests we can do to identify different metals.

Flame test

Sodium hydroxide precipitation test

Sodium Hydroxide Test

If we add sodium hydroxide to an ionic solution (not sodium or potassium salt) we will form a precipitate.

+

Iron

chloride

Sodium chloride

Sodium hydroxide

Iron hydroxide

Different metals give different coloured precipitates

When sodium hydroxide is added to ammonium salts ammonia gas is produced. Ammonia turns damp blue litmus red
