Testimonial Propaganda

Thesis Statement

" ' Our Leader, Comrade Napoleon,' announced Squealer, speaking very slowly and firmly, 'has stated categorically--categorically, comrade-- that Snowball was Jones' agent from the very beginning--yes, and from long before the Rebellion was ever thought of.' "

This is an example of testimonial propaganda because they are using Napoleon's name as a way to promote the claim. Since the animals know and trust Napoleon they figure whatever he says is right.

The tone of Squealer's speech is persuasive which is revealed through propaganda techniques such as, plain folks, testimonial, and name-calling.

Name-Calling Propaganda

Plain Folks Propaganda

" 'Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start! He was Jones' secret agent all the time. It has been proved by documents which he left behind him and which we have only just discovered.' "

" 'That was our mistake, comrade.' "

Plain folks propaganda is when the speaker is saying they are "of the people", average and relatable. Throughout his speech, Squealer addresses the other animals as "comrades" because he wants to make them feel equal.

Also, throughout his speech he says "we"

and "our" numerous times.

Name-calling propaganda is used when Squealer is making false claims about Snowball and has doesn't have proof. Squealer tells all the animals that Snowball was Jones' secret agent the whole time even though it isn't true. This form of propaganda is effective because it persuasive and convincing.
