Stanislavski: 'Emotion memory' and 'The Magic if'

Marshmallow exercise

"The actor must believe in everything that takes place on the stage and most of all in what he himself is doing and one can only believe in the truth."- Stanislavski

In pairs I want you to use a marshmallow to create sensory memories:

Begin with:

  • Vision
  • Touch
  • Smell
  • Taste

After you have created each memory I would like you to discuss it with your partner

Now imagine you are eating chocolate and repeat the same exercise using your imagination

Emotional memory

  • Possibly one of the most controversial acting exercises
  • Often confused with Lee Strasberg's Method acting style of Emotional recall
  • Actors should only use this when they can not naturally achieve a necessary emotion required for a scene.
  • In Stanislavski's system: The character is ALWAYS separate from the actor

What are we doing now?

  • Exploring Stanislavski's theory of emotional memory
  • Eating some marshmellows
  • Experimenting with the idea of 'The Magic if'

Emotion Memory

  • Stanislavski wanted his actors to come across as naturalistic.
  • Emotional memory is a technique that Stanislavski created for actors who were not able to connect with their character's emotional state.
  • To do this Stanislavski advised performers to reach into their personal memories and draw upon a comparable life experience.

'The Magic If'

What did we learn today?

Duologue:

Now individually think about your chosen scene.

  • Imagine this character is you:
  • How would you react?
  • What would you do?
  • What emotion would you feel?
