ECONOMY

Jamaica is a mixed economy with oil imports. It depends heavily on services. The September 11, 2001 attacks stunted Jamaica's economic growth. It came back in a moderate rate in 2003 due to tourism growth.

  • Imports: food and other consumer goods, industrial supplies, fuel, parts and accessories of capital goods, machinery and transport equipment, construction materials.

HISTORY

The word "jamaica" comes from Awarak word Xaymaca, meaning “Land of wood and water”. Christopher Columbus first came to Jamaica on May 4, 1494 while on his second voyage to the “new” world.Jamaica has two political parties called the People's National Party and Jamaica Labour Party. Every year, an annual island wide activity is held to celebrate the anniversary of independence on August 6. Jamaica's capitol is Kingston. On August 6. 1962, Jamaica became independent and seperated from British rule for over 300 years. 90% of Jamaica's population is from African Descent. Jamaica's current prime minister is Portia Simpson Miller

Miller has been president of the People's National Party since 2006 and Member of Parliament since 1976. She is Jamaica's first female prime minister.Portia is affectionately referred to as 'Sister P' or 'Mama P'. She was reelected in 2008 defeating her former rival, Dr.Peter Phillips.
