Codes and Conventions of the Romance Genre

Sound

Romantic comedies often begin with a non diegetic soundtrack or score, it will usually be a strings instrument or a jazzy piece of music, it will be upbeat and light hearted. The diegetic sound will usually end when characters begin to talk or something happens. Dialogue or a voice over will usually be used to introduce them. Non diegetic sound will be used when something important happens or something emotional. Sounds are used to strike emotion within the audience. An example of this would be in Me Before You. Diegetic sound (that you can see on the screen) is used to create verisimilitude.

Typical Characters

Narrative

In Romantic films you will commonly see two main characters a male and female who will end up falling in love or something of those lines or have be heartbroken. This can be seen in almost all Romantic films for example Titanic Jack and Rose, Me Before You Will and Lou and many other films. There is also sometimes a character that isn't happy with their relationship and tries to stop it.

Lighting

Here is an example of how non diegetic sound is used to heightened the emotion of a scene.

In Romance films there is most of the time a boy meets girl narrative. They usually meet one another and fall in love or one of them does. Then there is a disruption and someone or something ruins this. The ending usually works in two ways one that they both live happily ever after or two when there is a tragedy and one of them dies or has to move away.

Lighting in romantic films tends to be quite bright and warm. However something that commonly happens in romantic films is that the lighting will reflect how the characters are feeling for example if they are sad then the lighting will be colder and dimmer where as if they are happy it will be rather warm and bright lights used. This helps to convey how the characters are feeling. you can see the brightness of the scenes changes with her mood.

Starts off as his carer but eventually they fall in love with one another however at the end they don't live happily ever after Will chooses to end his life.

In the Silver Linings playbook the two characters don't get on at the start and only right at the end do they get together and it is presumed that they live happily ever after.
