parallel ports vs. serial ports

How does it work?

Overview

-parallel port can only send information to the computer

-serial port can send both to and from the computer

-parallel ports have 2 rows of minimum 25 pins

-serial ports have two rows with 9 pins

Com3 and COM4 can not work together because they have the same Interrupt, same for COM2 and COM 4

-seial and parallel ports have largely been replaced by USB (universal serial port)

-some ancillary devices still allow for connection by both means

-parallel can support rates up 100 kilobytes/second

-parallel was popular because it moved eight bits at a time over parallel connection

-serial can only support rates up to 115 kbps

-later technology advances pushed serial speeds up to 460 kbps

-the serial and parallel port were the most common means of data transfer and communication

-considered cutting edge for most of PC history

-the serial and parallel port have largely been replaced by the use of USB ports

-they are used to connect peripheral devices to the computer
