Serfdom Part II

By:

Owen Ennis

They were bound socially because then their kids would become workers for the same place and he would be able to keep care of his family while at work. .But for all of the peasants and the serfs their life was described as “nasty, brutish, and short.” This means that their lives were (http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/medieval_peasants.htm)

Serfs

Serfs are an example of the lowest social class in feudalism. Serfs were bound to the lord legally because when the nobles said we need the knights to come and fight they were required to bring their own amount of soldiers to come and fight. They were also bound economically because the lords would pay the serfs for the work that they did.

Feudalism Part II

Feudalism

The way he was able to that was, the king of Wales died when Wales was revolting against England and king Edward took advantage of how there was no leader and he built massive castles in Wales.

The other country he took was Scotland when the king of Scotland died after falling off his horse he then took advantage of the country with no leadership and claimed it for England.

So the people of Scotland would be working as serfs were people who would do any type of work that was required of them. “They were also bound legally, economically, and socially” (http://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Serfdom.html). Since peasants are in that same class then the scots would have been treated like they were nothing from the lords, and lords could do whatever they wanted to do because King Edward gave them the rights they needed to keep the kingdom in control.

King Edward Part III

Feudalism is when there is a king who then has a group of nobles who give the king what he needs. Then there are knights and vassals who work for the kingdom by giving them protection. Then there are merchants and farmers who give food to the kingdom. Then there are peasants and serfs who work for the farmers and are at the bottom of feudalism. Since peasants are at the bottom of the chart they would get treated the worst out of everyone.

The way he was able to keep the countries in his control is he had lords who owned their own fief in the different countries which means king Edward used feudalism which is controlling by military powers. King Edward is an example of the leader in feudalism.

King Edward I

In the feudal system a king was at the topo f the land they owned, an example of that is king Edward I. Edward was a prince that was coming back from the crusades when he heard that his father Henry III died and he was the new king of England. He didn’t have power in his military but he was able to conquer two countries.

Introduction

Scottish peasants were in a social class as peasants but there was another group called serfs. This group continued until the 18th century. "If he chose to dispose of a parcel of land, the serf or serfs associated with that land went with it to serve their new lord."(http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Serfdom) Peasants were different than serfs because all peasants would have their own land while serfs would be working on the land besides a couple who could have their own land

Thesis Statement

My thesis statement is that the Scottish peasants were treated quite badly because peasants were considered to be at the bottom of the social order along with serfs who were virtually slaves.
