The Menominee and the Manabush

Our Myth

Background Information

A man and a women were made from animals. The very first men were made from a bear and from an eagle. The first women were made from a beaver. After they were created a couple of other animals joined them and became into humans, and they then formed the tribe known as the Menominee people.

The story comes from the Menominee or Manabush people of northern Wisconsin. When Mashe Manido, the great spirit created humans from animals. The animals created a tribe and became the Menominee people. The first animal which was a bear transformed into the first human. Shortly after an eagle joined him and also took form of the human.
