The Act of Union (1707):

The Creation of a United Kingdom

I/Definition

The Act of Union was signed on 16 January 1707 and went into effect on 1 May 1707.

It is an Act which united the kingdoms of England and Scotland and established the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

The Act of Union includes 25 articles.

- It is a “give-and-take deal” between the governing elites of both countries:

- England would grant Scotland freedom of trade and access to colonial markets, while Scotland would agree to Hanoverian succession, after Queen Anne (1665-1714).

England’s gain was the security of the Hanoverian succession, while Scotland's was to benefit an economic security through the access to English and colonial trade.
