Topic Sentence - What the paragraph is going to be about; should reference ESSAY QUESTION and PERSONALITY TRAIT.

- Malvolio thinks that Olivia may fancy him.

- However, Olivia has no romantic interest in Malvolio and instead depends on him for being her servant.

- Malvolio's personal thoughts demonstrate his self-importance and arrogance, and how oblivious he is to how others see him, which makes him a very interesting character.

When you have finished this preparation in your classwork jotters, you may then write the first draft of your essay into your assessment jotters.

Critical Paragraph Structure:

Shakespeare presents Malvolio as an interesting character when he provides insight into his arrogant nature. Malvolio displays this arrogance when he, thinking aloud to himself about Olivia, and before he is tricked by a fake love letter, mentions that he believes Olivia may have feelings for him:

“Maria once told me she did affect me; and I have heard herself come thus near that, should she fancy, it should be one of my complexion.”

Essay Question:

Your notes should have, for you character:

Choose a play in which there is a character that you find interesting.

Malvolio thinks that Olivia may fancy him. However, Olivia has no romantic interest in Malvolio and instead depends on him for being her servant. Malvolio's personal thoughts demonstrate his self-importance and arrogance, and how oblivious he is to how others see him, which makes him a very interesting character.

+ then you would add your evidence (quotations) and analysis from your tables.

Malvolio displays this arrogance when he, thinking aloud to himself about Olivia, and before he is tricked by a fake love letter, mentions that he believes Olivia may have feelings for him:

“I will drop in his way some obscure epistle of love; wherein, by the colour of his beard, the shape of his leg, the manner of his gait, the expressure of his eye, forehead and complexion, he shall find himself most feelingly personated.”

Now...

Another Example: Maria

Analysis:

Maria, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew dislike Malvolio and want to make fun of him. Maria decides to write him an obscure love letter. She knows that, because of his arrogance, he will easily believe it is for him, and she knows that this will be amusing for her, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. Maria’s letter idea conveys her mischievous, sly streak and shows her conniving personality, making her an interesting character.

Write your own topic sentences, points, and contexts for your chosen character.

Shakespeare's portrayal of Maria as a conniving character makes for an interesting development in the play. With Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, Maria sneakily conspires to write Malvolio a love letter and pretend it is from Olivia:

Use your analysis tables for your paragraph's content, and the notes taken today of examples, for support.

Write a topic sentence, point and context for this paragraph, and set out your evidence properly using colons and indentations.

“I will drop in his way some obscure epistle of love; wherein, by the colour of his beard, the shape of his leg, the manner of his gait, the expressure of his eye, forehead and complexion, he shall find himself most feelingly personated.”

If you think you have finished, look over the handout showing a model introduction and conclusion of a critical essay.
