The Liberation Thesis

Theorists

Carol Giardina (1989) said that "If you know that we are a sex that fights for our freedom, then you already understand the Pro-Women line." This tells us that from this feminist perspective no matter the amount of patriarchy, the women will still continue to break the barrier and become more confident

Case Studies

London Riots 2011 - 10% of those who took part in the riots were female. If there was less patriarchy then they would of been more females who took part. Women were seen to take nappies, baby food and bags of rice which shows there is still a housewife role, due to a patriarchal society.

Aileen Wuornos 2002 - Killed 5 men within the year, claiming they were rapists or had attempted to rape her. She was also a prostitute. The liberation thesis would say that these ideas are due to her being scared of men due to the patriarchal society and so she retaliated which gives her her right to liberate.

Martin Denscombe (2001) - Did a study in on Midland teenagers' self-images found that females were as likely as males to engage in risk-taking behavior and that girls were adopting more 'male' stances, such as the desire to be in control and look 'hard'.

Michele Burman et al - Questionnaire survey on teenage girls in Glasgow. Found that 98.5% of girls had witnessed first hand some form of interpersonal physical violence; 70% had witnessed first hand five or more such incidents. Nearly two thirds knew someone who had been physically hurt or injured in violence.

She argues that as society becomes less patriarchal, so women's crime rates will rise. in other words, women's liberation from patriarchy will lead to as new type of female criminal because they will have greater opportunity and confidence to commit crime.

Introduction

In the Western world, since the 1960s, women had been entering the labor market in increasing numbers, and a range of laws were introduced to help and protect them from discrimination. Women were started to compete with men for jobs and were becoming more like them e.g. smoking and drinking. Adler argues that another way women were copying men was an increase of criminal activity. They were no longer afraid and women had more opportunity to commit crimes as they were in the public domain. in the past, women had the housewife role which made opportunities for crime more limited.
