Animals Should NOT be Used for Cosmetic Testing

Should animals be used to test cosmetics that they will never use? Some people think that it is okay to test sometimes fatal cosmetics on animals because animals are less important and more abundant. Many other people believe that it is not okay to test cosmetic products on animals because it is cruel and many animals die very quickly. My personal opinion, along with many other people’s, is that animals should not be used to test cosmetics because they are being treated like they have no feelings, or rights.

People who support the testing of cosmetics on animals believe that animals do not have the same rights as people do, and they need some way to test things without using humans. They also say they need a way to make sure that what they are selling is not going to get someone sick or kill them. Mainly animals are used to guarantee the safety of the people that are going to use them.

Why should animals be used to test cosmetics?

"Some scientists still argue that animal testing of cosmetics is necessary. About Animal Testing claims that acute animal suffering is a myth; that the animals suffering is limited and that isolated instances give a distorted impression of the truth. They further claim that scientists argue that, although there are alternatives, while useful, these alternatives do not provide the scientific significance and animal testing is still needed."

I disagree completely with this because there are alternatives to animals, and although businesses can’t sell something toxic it is unnecessary to sacrifice the lives of so many animals. Often the testing on animals is ineffective, and about 92% of tests that did not affect animals affected people. Many cosmetic companies are not testing on animals anymore, and many transportation services will not transport animals that are going to be used for testing. This is forcing more and more companies to stop using animals as testers and that is an amazing thing.

Some Other Reasons Animals Should Not be Used in Cosmetic Testing

The Cruel Treatment of Animals

"During the tests, the rabbits' eyelids are held open with clips. Animals may break their necks or otherwise be injured as they struggle to escape. Technicians performing eye irritancy tests do not attempt to treat the rabbits or seek antidotes to the test substance, so the test cannot help lead to treatments for potential human injuries."

Alternatives are Cheaper

"Non-animal test methods have proved to be more reliable and less expensive than animal tests. Alternatives include the use of cell cultures; tissue cultures; corneas from eye banks; and sophisticated computer and mathematical models. Companies also have the option of formulating products using the many ingredients or combinations of ingredients already determined to be safe for human use. "

Tests on Animals Aren't Reliable

"Animal testing is often ineffective in predicting how products will work on people. Some estimates say up to 92% of tests passed on animals failed when tried on humans."

For these reasons animals should not be used to test cosmetic products when there are so many alternatives to it. The animals are tortured and sometimes killing themselves to try and escape. These animals should not be subjected to the cruel treatment and should be able to live their lives as animals should.

"Revlon Cosmetics was one of the first large companies to fund research for alternatives with a $750,000 contribution to the Rockefeller University in 1979. Several organizations such as the John Hopkins Center for the Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), the International Foundation for Ethical Research, the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, and the Soap and Detergent Association followed suit and started their own programs to validate alternatives."
