This particular era, gave birth to our modern day ideas. sports, clothing, and many more. One of these is modern day occupations and businesses. Guilds are much like modern day labor unions. You can receive training on job at a trade school as an apprentice. And jobs itself are much alike to what we have today.
In the 1500's you would see weavers, bakers, tradesmen, and blacksmiths. All of them mostly family owned, and managed. Line of works would vary from catching a rabbit to working for the Queen. And if you did work for the queen the jobs went from, being a watchman , a chimney sweep, or a town crier. If you so happened to become a solider, life would be challenging. Money, and amount of food were limited. You were also given permission to beg without being whipped. From Elizabethan England, occupations have been thoroughly passed down to us. Things have been more efficient. But the basic idea of things have stayed the same.
In Elizabethan England, an apprenticeship was like on-the- job-training in today’s modern world. Today, if you want on-the-job-training you go to a trade school for what you are interested in. Apprenticeships occurred when a boy wanted to learn and become a part of a trade. These boys were sent to a master of the trade to become his apprentice, and it was very costly to do so. The boy’s parents would pay for theirson’s apprenticeship, which was like paying for room and board and also an extra fee similar to tuition. They had to pay for the extra fee, because it was for the privilege of being taught by this master. Most of these apprentices were the son’s of merchants from the “merchant class.”
Masters would be demanding, and required their apprentice to do everything that they asked. In return for the entire task you did, your master would provide certain things for you. He would provide a room, clothing of his choice, and food. His valuable information that he gives to you, also counts as a reward. An apprenticeship lasted for about seven years, but was very tough so a lot of apprentice couldn’t finish it. After completing the seven years, a child became a journeyman in his particular trade, and then became a master. This is kind of similar to graduating a trade school in our modern world.
Each trade had its own Guild, which acts like a trade union in our world today. Just like trade unions today, these Guilds would raise prices when demands were high, and set prices that would help beat their competitors. They also had labors laws just like in our world today, and shared information between other Guilds. For an example, they would let other Guilds know if an apprentice ran away from his old master, because this would cause him to never be employed again. Just like some businesses today won’t hire you, if they know you have been previously fired.
-Created partly to serve the rights of their members
-Separate and distinct from the civic government but were often mixed up because there functions and purposes were similar
Two especially important types of Guilds:Merchant Guilds- first to appear and constituted the nucleus for the civic government; formed for protection of merchants horses, wagons, and goods while travelingCraft Guilds- came about by increased specialization of industry; a group of artisans with the same occupation would associate themselves together for protection and mutual aid; as craft guilds started to build leadership in civic leadership no one could practice a craft without belonging to the appropriate guild assocationThe purpose of the Guilds was to maintain total control in a craft.
