Setting

The main settings of the book are Plumstead Middle School and Salem Brownmiller's house. Plumstead Middle School is where Sunny Wyler, Eddie Mott, and Salem Brownmiller go to school. The school is where most of the story takes place. Salem Brownmiller's house is also a main setting in the story. Salem invited the mascot committee to her house but the only one that came was Eddie Mott.

Plot

The first big thing that happened was that Sunny had to move to a different school than her best friend Hillary. She wanted to try to get kicked out of Plumstead and go to Hillary's school. That made her very mean and she was rude to Eddie Mott on the bus in the morning when he wanted to be friends with her. At school one of the ways she tried to get kicked out was to mess up on school assignments.

One day Eddie asked an eighth grader where his next classroom was and he told him the wrong place. So he missed two classes because he was hiding in a music closet next to a tuba. Then Salem tries to write a story about how Eddie gets bullied and Eddie gets mad.

The next thing that happens is there is a hamster running around the school and Salem finally catches it. When she catches the hamster, the principal puts Sunny in charge of it. Then Sunny, Eddie, and Salem are put on mascot committee to decide what their mascot is going to be. They decided on the Plumstead Hamsters.

Plot Continued

Problems and Solutions

Next Mrs. Wilburham, the school secretary, found the hamster lying on a pizza box in the freezer. Then they put the hamster in a box lined with cotton and all the students in the school came to see it. After the hamster died Sunny washed her hair and changed her shirt and had a nice look on her face. The hamster disappeared. When the whole sixth grade band was playing at the assembly, the hamster flew out of a tuba when the band teacher played it. It was not dead. It was alive! They were all so happy and glad it was not dead!

One of the problems is that Cedar Grove Middle School had too many kids. The solution is that they built another school called Plumstead Middle School and put half of the kids there. This leads me to the second problem. The second problem is when Sunny had to be separated from her best friend Hillary because Cedar Grove had to be split and they made Sunny go to Plumstead and Hillary went to Cedar Grove. The solution is that Sunny would try to get kicked out of Plumstead and hopefully, they would move her to Cedar Grove. The last problem is there was a hamster running around the school. The solution is they decide to keep it and make it the Plumstead mascot.

Main Characters

The main characters in the book Report to the Principal's Office are Sunny Wyler, Eddie Mott and Salem Brownmiller. Something they all have in common is that they all go to Plumstead Middle School.

  • Sunny Wyler seems to be a very mean and rebellious student because she was separated from her best friend Hillary at Cedar Grove. In order to go back to Hillary's school, Sunny is committed to wearing a DEATH TO MUSHROOMS t-shirt, not washing her hair, and be rude to people for the whole school year until she gets kicked out of Plumstead Middle School. She didn't care about her appearance and she tried to do badly with her schoolwork.

Eddie Mott is a very shy and scared kid at Plumstead Middle School. It's his first year of Middle School and he is scared he is going to get bullied by eighth graders. All Eddie is trying to do is to stay away from eighth graders. But one day he didn't know where his classroom was so he asked an eighth grader because he was the only person he saw, and the eighth grader sent Eddie to the wrong place. Eddie is very neat and organized. He always has a terrified look on his face.

Salem Brownmiller has long, brown, curly hair and her eyes are really big. She is very talkative, friendly, and energetic. She loves to write. One day she wanted to go with Mr. Brimlow, the principal, to the school bus because he was going to try to get Eddie Mott off the bus. She thought it would make a great story.

Themes

Report to the Principal's Office

The themes of the novel are try something new and give it some time before it works out and accept people the way they are. In the novel I am reading in class {Loser}, Zinkoff is a lot like Eddie. They are alike because Zinkoff is in the background and gets bullied like Eddie. The themes are similar because in Loser the theme is to accept people even if they are different. In this story Eddie missed elementary school every day and wished he was there. Finally at the end of the story he really liked middle school and couldn't wait to get back to school after the weekend.

Jerry Spinelli

Jerry Spinelli is an author that writes from his own experience as a child. He writes about things that happened in his life. He also likes writing about bullying. In the novel I am reading in class, it's all about bullying. When Jerry Spinelli was young he loved football. So he wrote a poem about a victory and decided he was good at writing. I would recommend this book to people who like school stories and love books that you can't put down.

Conclusion

I liked this book because I like these types of school books, and I would recommend the book to everyone. I did not like it because I like books that are about only one main character. I think this was a great book and I would like to read other Jerry Spinelli books.
