Cause of the Black Christmas Bush fires

When the black Christmas bush fires happened!

The cause of the Black Christmas bush fires is believed to be caused by arsonist. People that deliberately lit the fires. There where also other factors. Intense tempertures that reached 45º along with the low humidity and 90km winds played an important role.

Throughout parts of NSW and ACT on December 24th 2001 and January 7th 2002 more than 100 bush fires destroyed

753 314 hectares.

Effects of the black Christmas bush fires

Because of the arson, the 100 fires that burned destroyed 109 homes and damaged another 40 homes. It left many families devastated and homeless. A further 466 buildings were destroyed. Among them where industrial buildings. 222 vechiles were destroyed along with 7043 life stock.

The black Christmas bush fire could have been worse but because of the work of 20 000 firefighters and 85 aircraft the impact was minimalised and 20 000 properties were able to be saved. No one died or were found to have serious injuries. Many people still battle over compensation.
