Types of Composition

Examining types of composition in Photography.

Triangle / Diagonal

Diagonal lines through an image create triangles, and triangles and diagonals help to suggest movement and create a dynamic photograph.

Framing

Golden Mean

In this composition the background is framed by a foreground element.

The proportion of this spiral composition creates a sense of harmony and balance.

Symmetry and Patterns

Two sides or halves that are the same or very close in size, shape, and position : the quality of having similar parts. Repeating elements to create a sense of rhythm.

Leading Lines

By thinking about how you place lines in your composition, you can affect the way we view the image, pulling us into the picture, towards the subject, or on a journey "through" the scene.

Rule of Thirds

Imagine that your image is divided into 9 equal segments by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. The rule of thirds says that you should position the most important elements in your scene along these lines, or at the points where they intersect.
