Obama runs for the Illinois State Senate.He wins the Democratic nomination for the seat, and is elected to the Illinois State Senate.

Obama becomes the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review Later that his autobiographical book, Dreams from My Father is published. In this book Obama discloses his past and personal struggles.

Obama becomes chairman of the Illinois Senate's Health and Human Services Committee.
