People in Larossa Bay are divided about bat colonies located near to residential areas. Lots of people want them want them to stay, but it's time they were moved because of the risk to peoples' heath and the noise, smell and mess they make.
A local member of the Flying Fox Protection Group Sally Sandwich said: “These animals have a rights too and they need somewhere to live with their families just like us". But three people have recently died after being bitten by bats and contracting Hendra virus which to most local residents is more important.
The people contacted by the Larossa Bay Times were mostly annoyed about their noise and smell. Michelle Brown of Little Street says "They keep us awake at night with their noise and their smell is unbearable". Their droppings are everywhere in our garden and on our car".
Department of Environment officer Tim Smith said in other areas when bats have been moved on it has been expensive and not very successful. He says this has led to residents taking matters into their hands, which is illegal.
The Larossa Bay bat colony is protected by law and is there to protect the bat population, but local residents are fed up with the bats’ smell, noise and mess and they are worried about the deadly viruses carried by them. Their message is that it’s time the people came first and the bats moved on.
