Cree Walking Out Ceremony

By Mary Matoush

Members of the community are invited to watch.

They gather around the entrance to the tent or teepee.

Then the child walks out with their relative.

An outfit is made for the boy or girl out of moose hide.

The ceremony is done at sunrise.

In the past an elder walked out with the children, but today it is a close relative.

At the end of the ceremony

the family prepares a meal for everyone.

Geese and beaver are cooked around a fire.

Moose and bear are boiled in a pot.

  • Cree Traditional Walking Out Ceremony

  • It is done when children are old enough to walk.

  • In the past it was done with a tent, but today tents and teepees are used.

We traditionally hunt geese, moose, black bear, and beaver.

In the past we hunted with a bow, but today a gun is used.

I am from Mitissini Lake, Quebec.

The child walks out toward a small tree.

Then they pretend to hunt .

This is how they learn about hunting and how we provide food for the family.
