Owls cannot chew food so they swallow it whole. To help them digest this they need two special systems. One is the glandular stomach. This is the stomach that makes the acid to digest the food, then it gets sent into the second stomach most commonly known as the gizzard. Here all of the bones, fur, and other things that cannot be digested, are ground up then sent back up to be heaved back up by the owl.
The nostrils are located at the base of the beak. Owls have very poor sense of smell.
An owls feathers on the wings are soft, and separated at the tips to sift air rather than to just slice through it. This is what makes owl flight so deadly silent. And helping this silence are their soft feathered feet.
Owls have short, curved, downward facing beaks. They are very good for tearing into prey or crunching it once captured. The beak has sharp edges that overlap each other in a scissor-like fashion.
Talons
Because an owl's eyes are fixed in place, they have to rely on their neck's ability to rotate, as much as 270 degrees in either direction.
Owls see best in dark areas but they are not blind in bright light this is a common mis-undersanding. They just greatly reduce the the size of the eye to get better sight will in strong light.
Owls are not blind in bright light this is a common misunderstanding. They just reduce this size of their pupils for better sight.
Many owls have feathered talons to sense contact with prey, to protect them if prey bites back, or to protect them from harsh wind and cold weather.
The claw is made up of four toes, when in flight three toes face front while one faces back. When perched outer right toe swivels backwards for better grip.
Owls have highly developed hearing because they hunt at night. The ears are covered with feathers, so they are not usually seen. The tufts of feathers coming out of the top of an owl's head are not ears, they help funnel the sound into the ears.
Some owls have asymmetrical ear cavities. Which means that one ear is slightly above the other.
