"And it started with a single word. Divorce. It was an ugly word he thought. A tearing, ugly word that meant fights and yelling, lawyers...Divorce. A breaking word, and ugly word. Divorce."

Once Paulsen was given a

library card his life changed.

He started to read and loved it.

Once he finished one book, he

would immediatley start another

one. He used reading to escape

his problems. Now, he has written

over 175 books. This started

with his love for reading.

  • children help inspire him to write as well as his dogs.
  • one of his biggest inspirations for his writing is nature
  • He also believes sailing is an inspiration.
  • the city doesn't help him at all

"There was great beauty here-almost unbelievable beauty. The sun exploded the sky, just blew it up with the setting color, and that color came down into the water of the lake, lit the trees. Amazing beauty and he wished he could share it with somebody."

"I have a friend, he thought-I have a friend now. A hungry friend but a good one. I have a friend named fire...So much from a little spark. A friend and a guard from a tiny spark."
