Flow Production In Practice

Examples of products produced using this method of production are cars/vans and electrical items. These products are made using this method of production as large amounts of identical products can be made.

Advantages of this method of production are that raw materials can be bought in bulk, saving the business money; also the machinery used in the flow production process can operate for longer without breaks when compared to humans.

Disadvantages of flow production are that individual customer requirements cannot be met as each product is identical and large demand of products is needed because they are made in large quantities. Also if a fault occurs during the production process this can cause the whole production line to stop.

Job, Batch & Flow Production

Flow Production

Flow production is when parts are added to the product as it moves along the production line. The final product will be completed by the time it reaches the end of the production line. Flow production is sometimes called line production. As the product moves along the production line, machinery and workers have very specific tasks to do: one person might screw something in and another might paint a very specific part before moving onto the next task, which is known as division of labour.

Batch Production In Practice

Examples of products produced using batch production are loaves of bread or newspapers. These products are made using this method of production as batches can be altered to meet the customers requirements, which can result in higher customer satisfaction.

Additionally, raw materials can be bought in bulk therefore saving capital. Also there is no need for highly skilled workers as often machinery is used in this production process, minimising staff training costs.

On the other hand, a disadvantage of batch production is that due to the implementation of machinery in the production process, employees might find that they have nothing to do between batches which costs money. Also a mistake in one item can result in the whole batch being wasted, which costs money and wastes time. Lastly the cost of each item may be higher if the batch size is small and hence a higher price can be charged for the end product.

Batch Production

Batch production is when a group of identical products are made at any one time. All products in the batch move onto the next stage of production at the same time. Machinery and equipment can be cleaned and/or changed between batches to produce a different product.

Job Production In Practice

Examples of products made by job production include customised cakes and designer dresses. These products are made using this method, so as to ensure customer satisfaction, producing products personalised to the needs of the customer.

Furthermore, high prices can often be charged for these products as they are unique and require skillful craftsmanship.

However, disadvantages of job production are that raw materials can not always be bought in mass, therefore entailing that savings cannot be made from bulk buying. Also specialist tools may be required which can be expensive for the organisation and the production process can be time-consuming which may result in employee demotivation.

Job Production

Job production is when one product is made from start to finish before another one is made. The product is made to the customers own requirements and this results in a unique or one-off product being made. Products made by job production are usually handmade by someone who is very skilled in their profession.
