How do you think the government was during the Renaissance?
>Five political units dominated the affairs of Italy.
>Hereditary monarchs ruled the kingdom of NAPLES, but the kingdom soon fell to the Spanish monarchs of Aragon.
>The PAPAL STATES were numerous semi-independent cities seeking to distance themselves from ecclesiastical government.
>FLORENCE and VENICE were republics. The latter was a maritime republic, dependent on sea power, and only later developing dominance over its landlocked neighbors.
>MILAN- governed by a single aristocratic family.
Until 1450, the political affairs of the Italian peninsula were chaotic.( Foreign invasions, internal insurrections and political rivalries, and inter-city warfare) but during the fifteenth century, internal order was achieved through the development of centralized governments.
>Emergence of powerful elites gained control over the electoral processes.
>MILAN- Francesco Sforza established a new military government.
>NAPLES- Succession of the Aragonese
>PAPAL STATES- the end of the Great Schism allowed the popes to restore their authority
>Restoration of internal order led to the creation of a diplomatic balance of power within the peninsula. The Italian states used diplomacy as both a defensive and offensive weapon.
>Sforza’s overthrow of the Visconti in Milan led to the Peace of Lodi and the alliance of MILAN with FLORENCE. VENICE allied with NAPLES.
Why was the government created?
>Italy had a rich culture of trade and commerce, and around the 11th Century, began demanding their own government.
>The cities in which the people of the towns insisted on their share of the governments, called themselves "communes". These communes no longer had nobles or churchmen in power.
>They wanted to have their own government and taxation and not be under the rule of the wealthy landholders.
=civil unrest, wars, fighting, riots and rebellions against feudal land holders
So, what happened?
City-States became elected states, and the non-noble, working class came into power of the City-States and become Communes. The cities then were Despot ruled, and bringing the Italians way ahead of the rest of Europe. They were now masters in the art of diplomacy, espionage, and manipulating their way into power. This opened the way for the arts, education, trading, merchants, and overall growth of the area and attracted the attention of Europe. Europe took a closer look and took what they felt was the best and applied it to their own governments.
