Stalin gave North Korea's leader, Kim Il Sung, permission to invade South Korea. This triggered the start of the Korean war, which caused many deaths and was an example of an indirect conflict between the US and USSR during the Cold War.

Stalin and Hitler signed a nonaggression pact. This led to the annexation of parts of Poland and many other areas. This illustrated his expansionist policy and his goals, which he would continue to pursue after the war.

Under Stalin's control, the Soviet Union seizes control of Czechoslovakia. This solidifies Stalin's control of Eastern Europe. This divide between eastern and western Europe is an integral part of the Cold War. Also, the spread of communism in eastern Europe stabilized Stalin's power and the Soviet Union.

This was when the first Five-Year Plan was initiated. It provided the groundwork for rapid industrialization, which was one of Stalin's most important goals as leader of the Soviet Union. However, it wasn't very successful and it was characterized by the start of mass deportations to labor camps and a decrease in the quality of life for Soviet citizens.

The USSR defeated Germany. This ended the second world war in Europe; however, Russia suffered the most losses. Many of the disagreements and broken promises after the end of the war caused discontent between the Grand Alliance, which contributed to the start of the Cold War.

On December 1st, Stalin's agents executed Sergei Kirov, which marked the beginning of the Great Terror. From this time until 1938, millions of government officials and potential enemies of the Communist Party and Stalin in general were purged. This was a time period during his rule that he's remembered by and gave him his reputation as a brutal murderer.
